Janna VFX Update Coming to PBE Soon

Riot has just announced an upcoming VFX update for one of its champions, and this time it's none other than our queen Janna. She's getting quite the facelift. Yes, she glides over the Rift like an elegant fairy, but her model is fairly old and her ability textures don't feel or look as rewarding as they should. So Riot is fixing that in the next PBE cycle. Riot QA Engineer Riot Pehrek from Riot's Champions Team briefed the community on the VFX update, detailing what they'll be updating and changing on the champion. This update will be similar to the one Nami got earlier this year, or the one Shaco got. So we can expect the outdated effects on her abilities to be updated.

Every Change Planned for Janna's Visual Effects Update

For those unsure what a VFX (visual effects) update is, let's quickly go over it. Basically, it's one of the smallest update packages Riot sends out for its champions. These kinds of updates only touch effects and textures, and sometimes a champion's hitbox or abilities. So a visual update is a far cry from a VGU, which means a visual and gameplay update. As with what happened to Udyr in the latest patches, a champion's entire look and kit gets overhauled. We're sad we won't get to see the new Udyr at the 2022 League of Legends World Championship.

Okay, enough talk — now it's time to check which Janna skins will be affected by the VFX update:

• Base Janna: Complete overhaul
• Tempest Janna: Same as base
• Hextech Janna: Complete overhaul
• Frost Queen Janna: Complete overhaul
• Victorious Janna: Complete overhaul
• Forecast Janna: Complete overhaul
• Fnatic Janna: Same as base, but with a custom W
• Star Guardian Janna: Impact effect added to Q and Tornado minor update, new upgrade visual effects on R
• Sacred Sword Janna: Impact effect added to Q and Tornado minor update, new upgrade visual effects on R
• Charmed Janna: Impact effect added to Q and Tornado minor update, new upgrade visual effects on R
• Guardian of the Sands Janna: Impact effect added to Q and Tornado minor update, new upgrade visual effects on R
• Battle Queen Janna: Impact effect added to Q, new upgrade visual effects on R
• Crystal Rose Janna: Impact effect added to Q, new upgrade visual effects on R
• Cyber Halo Janna: Impact effect added to Q, new upgrade visual effects on R
• Prestige Cyber Halo Janna: Impact effect added to Q, new upgrade visual effects on R

As you can see, there's something changing across many of Janna's skins. The older the skin, the more tweaks and fixes Riot will make, but even newer skins like Battle Queen Janna or the recent Steel Valkyries skin are getting a light overhaul on some abilities too.

Even though Elise's VFX update didn't go as planned, we know that Riot's other recent releases have been received quite well. Honestly, nothing is more frustrating than getting hit by indistinguishable abilities, especially when you can't even tell what it is or whether it's actually going to hit you. So you should be excited for this VFX update!

When Will the Janna Update Release?

Riot plans to release this VFX update in LoL Patch 12.19, meaning it will hit the PBE server after Patch 12.18 releases. So if you have PBE access, you can test out the new ability particles if you want. Otherwise, you'll have to wait until Patch 12.19 releases.

There's one thing we do have to complain about: this VFX update could have come a little earlier... seriously, why release it now when they could have had it ready for the 2022 League of Legends World Championship?
