  2. It relies on a deep, compact defence and protected midfield to win the ball and quickly supply two attacking strikers.

  3. The tactic suits matches against stronger opponents but is vulnerable to sustained wing play and may concede shooting space against shoot-on-sight teams.

The OSM 5-3-2 tactic in short: a counter-attacking shape with five defenders, three central midfielders and two strikers. The 26/27 community setup is Counter-attack, Pressing 30, Style 25, Tempo 60, with Defenders on Defend deep, Midfielders on Protect the defence and Forwards on Attack only.

This setup comes from the site tactics shared by OSM Helper, where it is flagged for use against stronger opponents. We have not tested it. Below we explain its logic, how to adjust it for the opponent's game plan, and where 5-3-2 is weak.

OSM 5-3-2 tactic settings

OSM tactics screen: Passing game, Normal tackling; Drop deep, Protect the defence and Defend deep line tactics
Setting Value In-game label
Game plan Counter-attack Sit deep, break fast
Forwards Attack only Both strikers stay high
Midfielders Protect the defence Three midfielders screen the back line
Defenders Defend deep The back five stays deep
Pressing 30 Sit deep
Style 25 Defensive
Tempo 60 High-speed passing
Marking Zonal marking Five defenders hold zones
Offside trap No The line stays deep

Tackling depends on the referee. According to OSM Helper's referee guide, you can play aggressively with green and blue referees, yellow referees are among those who show the most red cards, and you should tone it down with orange and red ones.

Why these settings work together

Game plan: According to OSM Next Level's game plan guide, shapes with five or more defenders play on the counter; they are built to defend deep and break quickly. OSM Helper also describes Counter-attack as the plan for formations with a crowded defence.

Low pressing, low style: The team stays compact and does not leave space behind midfield. Pressing in the "Sit deep" band also saves your players' fitness.

High tempo: This is the key to the counter. If you build slowly after winning the ball, the opponent resets; a tempo around 60 gets the ball to your two strikers quickly.

Zonal marking: Under OSM Next Level's marking rule, zonal marking keeps the shape when your defenders outnumber the opponent's forwards. With five defenders, you have a spare man against almost every formation.

Fine-tuning for the opponent's game plan

  • Against Wing play: 5-3-2 has little width of its own. OSM Next Level names its biggest weakness as "a back five stretched by sustained wide play". Choose wide defenders with strong defence ratings and keep the midfield on Protect the defence.
  • Against Shoot on sight: Sitting too deep gives them shooting space in front of the box. OSM Next Level recommends taking the ball off such sides rather than retreating, so consider raising pressing a little.
  • Against Long ball or Counter-attack: OSM Helper's guide says the offside trap can help against these plans. OSM Next Level only switches it on against counter-attacking 5-3-1-1 and 6-3-1, and rarely even then. If you use it, make sure your line steps up together.
  • Against Passing game: Your three central midfielders close the middle; be patient and use the tempo when you win the ball.

When should you play 5-3-2?

OSM Helper flags this setup for stronger opponents, home and away. That is the logic: a stronger side wants the ball, and you wait without leaving space and then break fast. Against a weaker or evenly matched side, such a low style means spending most of the match without the ball.

OSM Next Level's data also shows what it recommends to managers facing a 5-3-2: 4-3-3B, Wing play and a tempo above 60 in every scenario. So when you play 5-3-2, expect an opponent who attacks down the flanks.

Player selection

  • Wide defenders: Strong defence ratings to deal with pressure from the flanks.
  • Central midfielders: Defence rating matters because they protect the back line; at least one should have the attacking value to carry the ball forward on the break.
  • Strikers: Your two highest attack ratings, because they will often be on their own during counters.

What changed since our older guide

Our 2022 5-3-2 guide recommended Counter-attack, 20% pressing, a defensive mentality and a "One-touch football" tempo, with the defenders on Support midfield. The 26/27 community setup shares the core idea: low pressing, low style and quick breaks. The differences are the tempo (60, "High-speed passing") and the defenders staying on Defend deep. OSM's official help page recommends testing tactics in friendlies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best game plan for 5-3-2 in OSM?

Community sources recommend Counter-attack. Back-five formations are built to defend deep and break quickly.

What pressing should I use in 5-3-2?

OSM Helper's site tactic uses 30 ("Sit deep"). Against a shoot-on-sight opponent, raising it slightly can make sense.

Should I use the offside trap with 5-3-2?

Not by default. OSM Helper suggests switching it on against long-ball or counter-attacking opponents, but the risk is big if it fails.

Which opponents trouble a 5-3-2?

Sides that attack down the wings for long spells. Width stretches a back five.
