Soulframe opens to all PC players on November 6. Digital Extremes, the studio behind Warframe, is ending the invite-only era of its fantasy action RPG with Open Preludes, a free alpha playtest available to anyone who signs up on the official site.

PC Gamer notes the game has been invite-only for three years. At its October 30 Devstream, the studio also detailed Verse of the Veilands, a November update that adds wolf mounts, a new world progression system and fishing features.

How do you get into Soulframe?

According to the official Soulframe site, there is no more waiting for an invitation once Open Preludes begins. Anyone who wants to play on PC can sign up at soulframe.com and download the launcher, and Digital Extremes recommends creating an account before November 6. Open Preludes is downloaded from the official website.

New players will explore an open world gripped by a dark corruption, learning combat styles and forging Pacts with ancient Omen Beasts. Story quests are called Fables. Completing them, discovering World Trees and freeing captive animals unlock further systems, including co-op, crafting, customisation and weapon progression.

What does Verse of the Veilands add?

Digital Extremes lists these headline features:

• Veilands: a new world progression system, unlocked after The Tormented Stag Fable, where you push back corruption spread by invading Ode forces
• Omen Wolf: train a wolf pup, purify two Veilands regions and feed it a Bairnday Biscuit to grow it into a mount
• Ode Shrike: a new Pact with spike traps, enemy-lifting balloon darts, damage-linking bola chains and an evasive throwing bomb
• Bita's Eve: the seasonal event returns with Wintersquash, a headless horserider mini-boss called Veltruska and a special fish, the Sunken Terror

Creative director Geoff Crookes told PC Gamer that players will enter a game that is much more unforgiving and harsh at first glance. The whole of Midrath now starts out corrupted, and the aim is to give newcomers a clearer, more direct introduction.

Will the update be ready for November 6?

Not necessarily. PC Gamer reports the team was still tweaking things days before the presentation, and the update may not make it in time for the open launch, though the plan is to release it before the end of November. Lead designer Scott McGregor called it one of the biggest, most violent changes to the game's structure in a long while. If you are brand new, it may be worth waiting for it.

In Digital Extremes' announcement, Crookes admits it feels a little scary to open the gates like this, but says that the more players join now, the more useful the feedback will be in shaping where Soulframe goes next.
