What Is Upland Me? 2022

Upland is a blockchain-based game where users can buy, sell, and trade virtual properties mapped to the real world. Users can build properties and earn UPX tokens as "digital landowners." The project uses blockchain to tie every property on the Upland platform to an NFT. Perhaps unique among rising blockchain-based games, Upland is trying to build a marketplace-driven digital economy that blurs the lines between the real world and the digital world.

How Do You Play Upland Me?

Upland is available as a mobile app and on desktop through upland.me. Signing up is free, and playing is even free if you don't mind growing your net worth at a more relaxed pace. Players who want to dive in will most likely want to spend a bit of money to get the ball rolling. That said, it's entirely possible to play the game without spending a single cent. If you haven't opened an account on Upland yet, use this link to earn a 50% UPX bonus on your first UPX purchase. You'll also get a 4,500 UPX bonus you can use toward your first property purchases in the metaverse.

What Is UPX?

UPX is Upland's official currency. It's used to buy and trade properties with other players, and it can be earned as interest on the properties you own. For reference, 1,000 UPX is roughly equal to 1 USD. Unlike the game's virtual features (NFTs), UPX is a cryptocurrency that players will soon be able to withdraw for fiat currency (like USD). All UPX transactions get recorded to the EOS blockchain once you reach Uplander status, which happens after you have a net worth of 10,000+ UPX. Before that point, players are considered visitors, and they need to become Uplanders to truly own their UPX and property NFTs.

How Do You Get UPX?

UPX, the fiat currency, can be bought with certain cryptocurrencies or earned through property sales. You can also earn UPX from treasure hunts and successfully completed collections, which we'll discuss later. According to Upland's 2021 roadmap, there will be many more ways to earn UPX as the game develops. You'll be able to collect UPX interest for every property once every three hours. While properties belonging to active collections earn higher returns, the standard rate is about 17% annually of a property's mint price. Interest earnings depend on the property's size and location. Your UPX earnings will keep accumulating even if you don't collect them right away, so there's no need to rush to collect interest every time the game lets you.

How Do You Navigate the Upland Metaverse?

No matter which city you're in, all properties will appear on the map as one of five colors:

  • Gray: Unminted. These properties haven't been claimed yet, and some may stay locked until a later date.
  • Light Green: Unminted, unlocked, and explored. These properties are available to players with a net worth under 100,000 UPX as part of the Fair Start Act (FSA).
  • Dark Green: Minted and for sale. You can buy these at the listed price or make an offer to the owner.
  • Light Blue: Minted and owned by another player. These properties aren't listed for sale, but you can still submit offers for the owner to consider.
  • Dark Blue: You own this property.

You can also toggle the pin icon in the bottom-right corner of your screen to display neighborhood borders, or use the search function to find a specific address.

Moving Around the Map

Every player has their own block explorer, an avatar that wanders randomly around whichever city you're in. As you progress in the game, you'll unlock more options for customizing your block explorer.

Collecting and Using Deliveries

While each block explorer moves randomly, players can somewhat control its movement by using Deliveries. Deliveries appear on the map as paper airplanes that can be collected while the block explorer is within range. Every player automatically gets 3 Deliveries every 24 hours. You can also collect up to 40 of them per day, but you can only hold 11 Deliveries at a time. Each time you want to send your block explorer to a specific minted location, you'll use one of your Deliveries. You'll also need to pay the property owner's UPX visitor fee, which can be found by selecting the property and reading its details.

Traveling From City to City

There are four cities you can visit in the Upland metaverse. They are: San Francisco, Fresno, Manhattan, and Brooklyn. Traveling from one city to another will cost you UPX and time, and both will vary depending on your departure and arrival points. Both San Francisco and Manhattan have airports that let players travel from one coast to the other for a fee, on a flight that takes less than an hour. Fresno and Brooklyn each have their own train station that can be used to travel between their main cities for a lower fee and shorter time than flying. Both airports and train stations are owned by players, and so they require extra UPX set by the owner. Factor in the fees and travel times before deciding to relocate your explorer.

How Do You Buy, Sell, and Trade Property?

Property trading is the backbone of Upland. Every property in the game corresponds to a real-life location that can be viewed by switching to Google Street View. If you're just starting out, it's recommended you focus on trading in Fresno or Brooklyn before moving up to their pricier counterparts.

Buying Property

Select any minted property on the map (light blue or dark green) to see more details. You can make an offer to the owner, or, if the property is for sale, simply pay the listed price. If you make a UPX offer on a property, that amount is deducted from your UPX balance and held in escrow. If the owner rejects your offer, it's returned to your UPX balance.
