Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One shuts down for good this week. Under Activision's schedule, the game stops being playable on last-gen consoles when Modern Warfare 4 Season 1 starts on November 6, making November 5 the final full day.

The shutdown is no surprise. Activision announced it in June and has been winding down services since then. Still, it closes a chapter for the many players who have dropped in on PS4 and Xbox One since 2020.

Why is Warzone leaving PS4 and Xbox One?

As Windows Central explains, the reason is simple: Modern Warfare 4 is not on PS4 or Xbox One. Warzone is free-to-play, but it integrates with each year's new Call of Duty. With Modern Warfare 4 only on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC, the last-gen versions cannot follow.

That integration happens with the first season, not the game's launch. Modern Warfare 4 released on October 23, and Warzone ties into it fully with Season 1 on November 6.

The Warzone last-gen shutdown timeline

According to Activision's support page, the wind-down has come in stages:

Activision says players who already own Warzone can still install and play it until the end of Black Ops 7 Season 06. New downloads have been unavailable since early June. Insider Gaming also notes that Warzone Mobile shut down in April 2026.

What happens to progress and COD Points?

Activision says your full progression carries over to any supported platform as long as you play on the same linked Activision account. Content bought with COD Points comes with you too.

The exception is unspent COD Points. Those only transfer to a current-gen console in the same family, so a PS4 balance moves to PS5 and an Xbox One balance moves to Xbox Series X|S.

What arrives in Warzone on November 6?

The shutdown lands on the same day as a big new season. Activision's Steam announcement says Season 1 goes live at midnight ET on November 6 (9pm PT on November 5). It brings two new maps, Hajin and Zodiac, while Verdansk and Rebirth Island return.

Activision said a separate Warzone blog post and roadmap covering everything in Season 1 would arrive on November 2. Modern Warfare 4 level unlocks also become usable in Warzone when Season 1 starts.

Warzone is not the only game going dark soon. Pure Xbox's roundup lists NBA 2K25 servers closing on December 31, while Synduality: Echo of Ada ends in-game purchases on December 18.

What should last-gen players do?

If you still play on PS4 or Xbox One, make sure your Activision account is linked before November 5. That account is what carries your progress to a new console or PC. Other Call of Duty games you own will keep working on PS4 and Xbox One.
