What Do We Know About LoL's New Darkin Champion?

Death's Dance is finally getting its own champion. At least that's what it looks like when you compare the item's icon to the image we see below, right? But joking aside, we do know that we'll finally be getting a new Darkin champion, but now we have some important questions to ask.

Riot revealed three brand-new Darkin characters in Legends of Runeterra. We have four new Darkin champions added to the latest League of Legends champion roadmap and entering the world of Runeterra, and we're pretty excited for some Edgelord and dark champions, but who... or rather, what will wield the Darkin? Let's try to find an answer to these questions together.

Who Is the Upcoming New LoL Darkin Champion? What Are Their Abilities in 2022?

New Darkin Champion: Will the Darkin Dagger Be Human?

This champion probably won't be human. Riot has actually stated that they're working on a champion who will look like a creature. Many fans have theorized that the Darkin dagger will actually be wielded by a dog. Wait, but how would a dog wield a dagger?

However, we could also get something much more sinister. Maybe a mutated animal form, like a Chimera, could also be in the works. The blade looks monstrous, with a snake-like eye, doesn't it? And combined with the fact that this Darkin will be female and, well... in Greek mythology, Chimeras are female creatures... so we're connecting some dots here.

Do We Know Who the Darkin Dagger Will Be?

Most of the Darkin were sealed inside Sivir's Chalicar by the Sunderer, but a few managed to escape, only to later become trapped in other weapons, seeking power once more and trying to be wielded by unsuspecting bodies once again. At first, most people thought only five had escaped, but there are more Darkin out there in Runeterra waiting to be found.

We don't know for certain who the next Darkin champion will be, but some have suggested a theory that this champion could be connected to another Darkin we're already quite familiar with. According to League of Legends lore, Varus had a sister, and he went to Shurima to find her.

Looking at the image above, the dagger appears to be somewhere in a desert — could that be the Shurima desert? Could this be Varus's sister, Valeeva? That would make sense, and we do love a bit of continuity for our champions' lore, don't we?

Will Death's Dance Actually Become Darkin?

As mentioned above, the current Death's Dance item bears a striking resemblance to the new character's concept art... a lot. So maybe this is another hint at what the upcoming champion can do. Will they have some kind of lifesteal abilities, or even some sort of healing ultimate...? There are plenty of options, but it's all still a mystery. Riot, give us more answers!

When Will the New Darkin Champion Release?

The Darkin champion's release has been delayed. After the August 2022 Roadmap video was published, Reav3 took to Reddit to explain that a few things have changed since the roadmap was drawn up, and that Ixtal's upcoming champion will release before the Darkin Champion.

So if you're excited for this Darkin, you'll need to wait a little longer, since Riot seems to be taking their time with them. This also makes sense given the new champion release philosophy of shipping fewer new champions each year. Hopefully we'll get the Darkin Dagger in the first half of 2023.
