Mid Lane Tier List - Who Should You Play in LoL Patch 12.20?

Best Mid Laners in LoL Patch 12.20: No. 3 – Neeko

Neeko currently has a win rate of 52% or better for almost 4 patches. Honestly, she is at the best spot she has ever been, so make sure you pick her before that changes! Originally released in 2019, Neeko has since had a fairly uneventful impact on the game. Neeko has an incredibly unique design and abilities, and even with her quirks, she has a pretty solid dedicated player base of people who love the champion. And yet Neeko flies under the radar.

Neeko is a Mid Lane Mage designed to have illusions or disguises to trick her opponents. That made for a really interesting concept, but in practice it fell apart. It was deceptive, hard to use and not very useful. So Neeko turned into a short-range, non-interactive mage who was good at deterring fights but not good enough to be picked over someone like Lissandra, Veigar or even Janna. That left Neeko rather faceless in the meta.

However, things are starting to turn around for this interesting chameleon. It is not clear why, but for whatever reason Neeko's win rate has been steadily climbing since the durability update. This is probably because Neeko has so much damage that the increased resistances champions got in Patch 12.10 are not enough to offset Neeko's damage. The problem was range, not damage.

One thing to keep in mind if you want to try and pick up Neeko is that she is quite tricky. You still need to understand the champion pretty well to pull everything off. Here are a few quick tips for Neeko to help you:

  • You can bind Neeko's passive to keys, so you can press a button and transform in the middle of a fight. Combine this with W and Ult and the enemies will be very confused.
  • If you randomly send your clone at your opponent in lane, you can get them to ignore your clone. When they start ignoring it, you can act like the clone and go for a free E-R combo.
  • Neeko's Flash cooldown is really important, because it lets her skip her short-range weakness for a teamfight, and a good Neeko Flash ult can win you the game, so value this summoner spell more than other champions do.
  • Neeko's Q has a lot of base damage, so try poking with it even if you have not leveled up E yet.
  • If Neeko's E lands the empowered root, it guarantees her ult, so if you see them get tangled, definitely try Pop Blossom!
  • Neeko's Ult has a really short CD, so make sure you abuse it. Any time you think you can pull it off, you can probably blow an enemy's Flash or important cooldowns. You can also use it to clear waves if you are in trouble, so use this ability a lot!

Best Mid Laners in LoL Patch 12.20: No. 2 – Diana

Diana is currently most often found in the jungle. Strong, clear, equipped with good dives, and with a golden Diana carry ability, she is a jungler's dream. It is no different in Mid lane: Diana has great wave clear, trading and rotations. Whatever matchup you are in, there is always a way to build yourself a lead. Even if you are behind, you can collect the turret plating when your lane rotates to get a quick burst of gold. (Diana plates faster than just about any other champion in the game.)

The Night Harvester + Electrocute build is more popular than Nashor's + Sunfire when it comes to mid lane, but you build it in mid the same way you do in the jungle. One thing to watch out for when playing Diana mid is that you have a lot of area of effect, and it can be really easy to push the wave into your opponent and freeze it. So be very careful not to freeze the wave on your opponent too easily when using your spells. If you find you are pushing the wave slowly into your opponent, an easy fix is to push hard until the next minion wave arrives and crash the wave, which makes the wave bounce back to you and gives you a more favorable position to lane.

Best Mid Laners in LoL Patch 12.20: No. 1 - Syndra

We recently got Syndra's MSU (mid-scope update), and although the changes are exciting, they did not get as much attention as we expected, but she is performing as well as we expected.

The changes tried to turn Syndra from an early-game tempo-based bully into a late-game hypercarry mage that fulfills the "Dark Sovereign" power fantasy. Riot did a great job at this: Syndra's late game is outstanding because she can hit almost any target with just her ult, and the rest of her kit has area-of-effect burst tools.

Other hypercarry mages like Syndra are Azir, Cassiopeia and Vladimir. Syndra's difference is that she does not have the range or durability those champions have; instead, Syndra is equipped with an extremely strong synergy. That means that although Syndra is incredibly strong late in the game, she is still very fragile and vulnerable to champions who outrange her.

To compensate for this, we recommend buying Crown of the Shattered Queen into Rabadon's Deathcap. This build path deals a lot of damage, but the shield from the Crown lets you walk long enough to pull off your whole burst combo. Other than that, just focus on last-hitting minions and finding good trades in lane, and if you can stay safe and collect her Splinters of Wrath, she scales well into the mid game and from there you dominate the game.
