Mass Effect 3 multiplayer is back, this time inside Mass Effect Legendary Edition thanks to a fan-made mod. The ME3Tweaks team released the PC mod on November 7, N7 Day, after three years of work. It does not rely on BioWare's servers and adds two new game modes.
When Legendary Edition launched in 2021, it had nearly everything fans wanted, with two notable exceptions: the original game's Pinnacle Station DLC and Mass Effect 3's co-op multiplayer. ME3Tweaks restored Pinnacle Station in 2021. As Kotaku reports, the group has now finished the job.
How was the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer mod made?
The project began with modder Mgamerz. After seeing that an unused Legendary Edition level could be ported to another game, he tried the same trick with a multiplayer map. His first attempt, Firebase Condor, looked terrible, but the game loaded it without crashing.
On November 7, 2023, Mgamerz set up a Discord server for Project Milan and told the rest of ME3Tweaks: "Let's do something stupid. Let's port multiplayer." By December 2023 they had a working prototype. Audio was almost entirely missing, shaders were broken and the game crashed by wave three, but enemies spawned and players could score points. The team rebuilt everything else on top of that over the next three years.

What is new in the mod?
This is not a straight copy of what BioWare shipped in 2012. Mgamerz admits the team got "too ambitious" and added new content on top:
- Coalition mode: Each wave brings a different enemy faction.
- Unified mode: Enemies from every faction are mixed together.
- Start options: The full original grind, a start with 10 million credits, or level one of every item unlocked.
- New banners: Rewards featuring art from the cancelled Mass Effect: Universe.
- Private servers: Play with friends without BioWare's servers.
The original pack-based progression stays in. The team also wants to add a simple store for buying items directly with credits, but that will not be ready at launch.

Why does BioWare's closure make this mod matter?
EA shut BioWare down on October 21. Kotaku notes that the N7HQ site where players tracked multiplayer stats appears to have gone with it, and fans worry Mass Effect 3's official servers could follow. Because the mod runs on its own servers, it could outlast the official multiplayer.
Mgamerz stresses that this did not start as a preservation project. He does not want his version to replace BioWare's work, calling it his own rendition built on top of it. Still, he says, "once it goes away, this is the only way you'll even be able to experience it." For background on the closure, see our report on BioWare shutting down.

Was AI used to make the mod?
Mgamerz says no assets, visual or audio, were generated with AI. The team only used a read-only tool he built to research the game files and report findings, and only in the last four months of development. Almost everything before that was done by hand.
The release lands as fans rally under the #SaveMassEffect banner, with some calling on players to launch Legendary Edition on Steam for N7 Day to boost its concurrent player count.
