According to Kotaku, some of the developers who worked on the game have now started talking. They are not spoiling everything, but they are sharing hints about the systems they built, which gives a clearer picture of what the game was meant to be.

What did technical director Romain Toutain reveal?

Franchise technical director Romain Toutain held a Twitch stream where he watched and commented on the leaked trailer. He spoke in French, and a Bluesky user shared a clip with English subtitles.

Toutain confirmed the main character would be customizable. He teased "incredible" lore explaining how the Mass Relays were repaired after their destruction at the end of Mass Effect 3. He also said the hand-to-hand combat in the trailer was not just for show: players could switch between gunplay and fists at a moment's notice.

How would the timeline system have worked?

The most interesting part of the stream was about choices. Toutain said every choice from the earlier games was taken into account. "One of the reasons why it was called Mass Effect: Universe is that you had so many choices that you could plug your saves together to create parallel universes," he explained.

Kotaku says this sounded far more ambitious than the three-choice import in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Players could even make decisions that contradicted what they had already done, creating new branches in the timeline. Toutain said everything in the game was stateful, with a logic system constantly checking whether a world state was valid. The goal was "absolute autonomy" for the player.

Another set of details comes from YouTuber Dantics. Eurogamer reports he claims to have sat on a BioWare community council and given feedback during development. That role has not been independently verified. His main claims, posted on X, are:

Missions are handcrafted but offer "Hitman-style freedom".
Liara returns as a powerful Asari Matriarch, and Shepard's legacy is preserved whichever ending you chose.

Dantics also mentioned Geth-built megastructures, links between the Milky Way and Andromeda, and a shadowy adversary. "From what I saw, BioWare was making Mass Effect for us, the fans," he wrote, adding that it "looked incredible".

What does this mean for Mass Effect fans?

Sadly, we will probably never play it. EA and BioWare have not responded to Dantics's claims, and Toutain stressed that the trailer was an internal video never meant for the public. Still, the details show how much the team was investing in player choice.
