OSM 3-3-4 Counter Tactic 2027 (26/27)
What beats the four-forward 3-3-4 in OSM 26/27? The marking rule, 4-3-3B for even and stronger sides, a 5-2-3A Counter-attack when weaker, and the reasoning.

In brief
AI summaryUse 4-3-3B with Wing play and man marking when you are equal to or stronger than a 3-3-4 opponent.
When weaker, use 5-2-3A with Counter-attack, zonal marking, and no offside trap.
The strategy exploits 3-3-4’s four forwards and only three defenders, while tackling should reflect the referee’s strictness.

There are two sensible routes for an OSM 3-3-4 counter tactic. If you are even or stronger, play 4-3-3B with Wing play and man marking; if you are weaker, go with a 5-2-3A back five and Counter-attack. Both rest on the same fact: 3-3-4 attacks with four forwards but has only three defenders.
To be clear: we found no numeric community table specific to 3-3-4 for 26/27. The advice below is derived from community tools' general rules and OSM Helper's site tactics; we have not tested it.
Strengths and weaknesses of 3-3-4

According to the formation list in OSM Helper's 26/27 guide, the game has two variants, 3-3-4A and 3-3-4B. Both use three defenders, three midfielders and four forwards.
| Strength | Weakness |
|---|---|
| Four forwards match a back four man for man | Only three defenders; exposed to counters |
| Keeps the opposing defence constantly busy | Three midfielders feeding four forwards help little in defence |
| Crowds the penalty area | The flanks are the hardest area for a back three to cover |
OSM 3-3-4 counter tactic: marking comes first

OSM Next Level's marking rule goes like this: if your defenders outnumber the opponent's forwards by at least one, zonal marking holds the shape; with no spare defender, you need man marking. Since 3-3-4 has four forwards:
- With a back four: No spare defender, so the rule says Man marking.
- With a back five: One spare defender, so Zonal marking.
This is what sets 3-3-4 apart. The zonal marking you would pick by default against most opponents can leave one of the four forwards free here.
Setup 1: 4-3-3B when you are even or stronger

| Setting | Suggestion |
|---|---|
| Formation / Game plan | 4-3-3B / Wing play |
| Forwards / Midfielders / Defenders | Attack only / Protect the defence / Defend deep |
| Marking / Offside trap | Man marking / No |
| Pressing / Style / Tempo (stronger) | 66 / 72 / 65 |
| Pressing / Style / Tempo (even) | 62 / 66 / 59 |
The slider values are OSM Next Level's general averages by squad strength, not calculated for 3-3-4 specifically. The reasoning: your three forwards drag their three centre-backs wide. The defensive midfielder and Protect the defence crowd the space in front of your back four against the three midfielders feeding their four forwards.
Setup 2: a back five and Counter-attack when you are weaker
Among OSM Helper's site tactics, this setup is flagged for stronger opponents:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Formation / Game plan | 5-2-3A / Counter-attack |
| Forwards / Midfielders / Defenders | Attack only / Protect the defence / Defend deep |
| Pressing / Style / Tempo | 70 / 30 / 70 |
| Marking / Offside trap | Zonal marking / No |
It is not built for 3-3-4, but the logic fits this opponent well. Five defenders give you a spare man against four forwards. Your three forwards, staying high, end up one against one with their three defenders on the break. A high tempo lets you use that equality the moment you win the ball.
Offside trap and tackling

Keep the offside trap off by default; it is off in 52 of OSM Next Level's 54 recommendations. OSM Helper's guide, however, says the trap can help if the opponent plays Long ball or Counter-attack. Check their game plan with the analyst before kick-off; if a four-forward side is playing long balls, only consider the trap if your back line can step up together.
Set tackling by the referee's colour. Man marking creates more duels, and aggressive tackling under a strict referee raises the card risk.
Home, away and strength gap
- Home and stronger: Setup 1 with the higher values. Keep attacking their back three down the flanks.
- Even match: Setup 1 with the even values; do not forget man marking.
- Away or weaker: Setup 2. The back five leaves no space while they have the ball, and you break fast when you win it.
According to OSM Next Level's overall data, venue makes little difference (pressing averages 63 at home, 62 away), so let the strength gap drive your choice.
What changed since our older guide
Our 2022 3-3-4 counter tactic guide recommended 4-3-3B and wing play, and that direction still looks valid. This version adds two things: the marking rule against four forwards and a back-five alternative for weaker sides. The tactics screen has not changed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best formation against 3-3-4 in OSM?
If you are even or stronger, 4-3-3B with Wing play; if weaker, 5-2-3A with Counter-attack. We found no 26/27 community table specific to 3-3-4.
Why man marking against 3-3-4?
The opponent has four forwards. With a back four you have no spare defender, so the community rule recommends man marking. With a back five, zonal marking is enough.
What is the weak point of 3-3-4?
Its back three. You can catch that line one against one down the flanks and with quick counters.
Have these values been tested?
No. They come from general averages and a community setup. Try them in a friendly and adjust.
