The 26/27 community advice for an OSM 5-3-1-1 counter tactic: be patient, but do not sit back; use the flanks. At home, 4-3-3A with Wing play is recommended in every strength scenario; for an even home game, start at Pressing 51, Style 61, Tempo 71.

The values come from OSM Next Level's 5-3-1-1 page (23 October 2026), a community tool; we have not tested them. Below are the table, the settings and why width opens this crowded defence.

What kind of formation is 5-3-1-1?

5-3-1-1 plays five defenders, three midfielders, a withdrawn forward and a striker. According to OSM Next Level, it is one of the most patient, counter-based setups in OSM; facing it often becomes a battle of who holds their nerve longer.

The 5-3-1-1 examples in OSM Helper's site tactics fit that picture. Both are saved with Counter-attack:

Line tactics (F / M / D) Pressing/Style/Tempo Marking
Attack only / Protect the defence / Defend deep 10/15/80 Zonal marking
Attack only / Stay in position / Defend deep 45/30/60 Man marking

So expect a side that barely presses, keeps its style very low and breaks very quickly when it wins the ball.

Strength Weakness
The withdrawn forward links midfield and attack on the break Few numbers going forward beyond the two attackers
Extremely compact with five defenders and three midfielders Can be unlocked by controlled width
Built for patience battles away from home Space behind the line is exposed to quick transitions once it steps up

OSM 5-3-1-1 counter tactic table (26/27)

Venue Your strength Formation Game plan Pressing Style Tempo
Home Stronger 4-3-3A Wing play 59 79 69
Home Even 4-3-3A Wing play 51 61 71
Home Weaker 4-3-3A Wing play 59 62 66
Away Stronger 4-3-3A Wing play 55 73 63
Away Even 4-3-3B Passing game 66 61 54
Away Weaker 4-3-3B Wing play 59 63 63

Two things stand out. Pressing is low: in OSM Next Level's data, the average pressing against 5-3-1-1 is 58, among the lowest of the nine opponent formations. There is no point chasing a side that has shut up shop. Tempo is high: 64 on average, because ball speed is what opens a crowded defence. At home and stronger, style goes up to 79, right at the edge of "All-out attack".

Line tactics, marking and offside trap

OSM pre-match tactics screen: Passing game plan and Normal tackling
  • Forwards: Attack only
  • Midfielders: Mostly Protect the defence (four of six recommendations), sometimes Stay in position. Their counters are fast, so the space in front of your defence must not be empty.
  • Defenders: Defend deep
  • Marking: Zonal marking. OSM Next Level counts 5-3-1-1 as a one-forward formation, so four defenders give you three spare men.
  • Offside trap: No by default. It is on in only two of OSM Next Level's 54 recommendations, and one of them is against 5-3-1-1. OSM Helper also says the trap can work against counter-attacking sides. Consider it only if your back line steps up together.

Why width and patience?

5-3-1-1 is built to compress the centre and win patience duels there. In the source's words, width avoids that fight entirely and attacks the side its compact shape covers worst. When Wing play takes the ball wide, the outer players of the back five are drawn out and space opens in the middle.

The home preference for 4-3-3A is because its attacking midfielder adds one more attacker to open a parked block. Away at even or weaker strength, 4-3-3B protects the space in front of your defence; the lone striker and withdrawn forward they leave up can break quickly when you lose the ball.

Waiting does not work. According to the source, 5-3-1-1 is already parked, so there is nothing to absorb and nothing to counter; waiting just hands them a free half.

Home, away and strength gap

  • Home, stronger: 59/79/69. Force the parked block open with sustained width and a very high style.
  • Home, even: 51/61/71. Low pressing, high tempo; move the ball patiently but quickly.
  • Away, even: 66/61/54 with Passing game. The only Passing game row in the table; the aim is to keep the ball and control the game without exposing yourself.
  • Away, weaker: 59/63/63. Controlled width; according to the source, you still have to respect the lone striker they leave up.

What changed since our older guide

Our earlier 5-3-1-1 counter tactic guide also focused on unlocking the defence. The 26/27 data adds clear numbers: low pressing, high tempo and wing play. The tactics screen is unchanged. OSM's official advice still stands: test it in a friendly first.
