In brief

AI summary
  1. Against a 4-3-3 Wing play opponent, the recommended counter is a 4-3-3B using Wing play, deep defending, midfield protection and no offside trap.

  2. The strategy attacks the flanks first, exploiting space behind advancing full-backs while keeping your own defenders deep.

  3. Use zonal marking and attack-only forwards, adjusting pressing, style and tempo based on strength and venue; consider a defensive 5-2-3 counter-attack against much stronger teams.

The 26/27 community answer for an OSM Wing play counter tactic: do not hand the flanks to your opponent, take them first. Against a 4-3-3 playing Wing play, the suggested setup is a 4-3-3 with Wing play of your own, Protect the defence in midfield, Defend deep at the back and the offside trap off.

The values come from OSM Next Level's 4-3-3 pages (23 October 2026) and setting guides, a community tool; we have not tested them. Since OSM Helper names 4-3-3 and 3-4-3 as the core Wing play formations, the table is based on 4-3-3.

What kind of game plan is Wing play?

Wing play is one of OSM's five game plans. According to OSM Next Level, it builds attacks down the flanks and suits formations with real wide players such as 4-3-3. OSM Helper's 26/27 guide calls it the most attacking plan in the game, with 4-3-3 and 3-4-3 as its core formations.

The Wing play examples in OSM Helper's site tactics show how an opponent is likely to set up:

Formation Line tactics (F / M / D) Pressing/Style/Tempo
4-3-3B Attack only / Stay in position / Defend deep 79/75/79
4-3-3B Attack only / Stay in position / Attacking full-backs 70/70/55
4-3-3A Attack only / Stay in position / Defend deep 60/60/69
3-4-3A Support midfield / Stay in position / Defend deep 69/50/50

So you will usually face a side that presses high, keeps style above 60 and sometimes pushes its full-backs forward.

Setting Suggestion Reason
Formation 4-3-3B (4-3-3A at home when stronger) Numbers on the flanks, a defensive midfielder screening the back four
Game plan Wing play (Passing game at home when stronger) Forces their full-backs to stay home
Forwards Attack only Keeps runners high to exploit space behind their full-backs
Midfielders Protect the defence (Stay in position in some matches) Chosen in four of six recommendations against 4-3-3
Defenders Defend deep Attacking full-backs leave space for their wingers
Marking Zonal marking Four defenders against three forwards gives a spare man
Offside trap No Off in all six recommendations against 4-3-3

Pressing / Style / Tempo by strength and venue

Venue Your strength Formation · Plan Pressing/Style/Tempo
Home Stronger 4-3-3A · Passing game 70/74/62
Home Even 4-3-3B · Wing play 67/70/54
Home Weaker 4-3-3B · Wing play 48/62/65
Away Stronger 4-3-3B · Wing play 70/74/65
Away Even 4-3-3B · Wing play 68/69/54
Away Weaker 4-3-3B · Wing play 65/63/48

The table is for a 4-3-3 A/B playing Wing play. If the opponent plays wing football with a 3-4-3, remember it has three defenders: your wide forwards pull that back three wide and create one-against-one situations on the break.

Why take the flanks instead of retreating?

The first instinct is often a back five. But according to OSM Next Level, the biggest weakness of back-five shapes is exactly sustained wing play: width stretches the five and opens space in the middle. That is why the source's 5-3-2 and 5-2-3 pages recommend wing play against those formations.

When a Wing play side's full-backs join the attack, space opens behind them. If you attack down the wings too, you leave them two options: their full-backs stay back and give up their own wing play, or they push on and expose the space behind. The source's note agrees: the side that takes the flanks first usually owns them.

Keeping your defenders on Defend deep matters here. If your own full-backs push up, you hand their wide forwards the same space.

If the opponent is much stronger

With a big squad gap, a more defensive plan is an option. OSM Helper's 5-2-3A with Counter-attack (Pressing 70, Style 30, Tempo 70), flagged for stronger opponents, gives you two spare defenders against three forwards. The warning above still applies: the wide players of a back five should have strong defence ratings against wing play.

Player selection and tackling

  • Full-backs: High defence ratings; they will face their wide forwards one on one.
  • Wide forwards: High attack ratings; they will run in behind their full-backs.
  • Tackling: Based on the referee. With lots of duels on the flanks, pick Normal or Careful with red and orange referees.

What changed since our older guide

The game plans have stayed the same since our 2023 Wing play counter tactic guide. The 26/27 community data favours answering wing play with wing play and keeping the offside trap off. OSM's official help page also recommends testing a tactic in a friendly first.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best counter to Wing play in OSM?

In the 26/27 community data, the most common answer to a 4-3-3 playing Wing play is 4-3-3B with Wing play of your own. At home with a stronger squad, 4-3-3A with Passing game is also recommended.

Is a back five a good idea against wing play?

Not by itself. According to community sources, sustained wing play stretches a back five. If you use one, pick wide defenders with strong defence ratings.

Should I use Attacking full-backs?

It is not recommended. If your full-backs push up, you leave space behind for their wide forwards.

Should I use the offside trap against Wing play?

No. None of OSM Next Level's recommendations against 4-3-3 use it, and OSM Helper only suggests it against long-ball and counter-attacking sides.
