The OSM Shoot on sight tactic relies on a crowded midfield winning the ball and shooting from distance whenever possible. In 26/27, the community uses it with 4-2-3-1, 4-5-1 and 5-4-1B; style is usually low (7–39) and defenders stay on Defend deep.

The setups come from OSM Helper's site tactics, and the strengths and weaknesses from OSM Next Level's guides, a community tool. We have not tested them.

What is the OSM Shoot on sight tactic?

It is one of OSM's five game plans. According to OSM Next Level, it shoots from distance whenever it can. OSM Helper's 26/27 guide adds that it is played with crowded midfields: five midfielders are ideal, and the most popular formations are 4-5-1 and 4-2-3-1.

OSM Next Level also classifies 4-2-3-1, 4-5-1 and 5-4-1 as Shoot on sight formations.

OSM pre-match tactics screen: Passing game plan, Normal tackling and line tactics
Formation F / M / D Pressing/Style/Tempo Flagged for
4-2-3-1 Attack only / Protect the defence / Defend deep 65/30/55 All situations
5-4-1B Support midfield / Protect the defence / Defend deep 39/29/59 All situations
4-5-1 Support midfield / Stay in position / Defend deep 55/35/55 Even and stronger opponents at home
4-5-1 Support midfield / Stay in position / Defend deep 45/35/45 Even opponents, home and away
4-5-1 Support midfield / Protect the defence / Defend deep 19/39/69 Even and stronger opponents away
4-5-1 Support midfield / Stay in position / Defend deep 25/19/50 Stronger opponents, home and away

What they share: defenders always on Defend deep, style never above 40, and in 4-5-1 the striker helps the midfield via Support midfield. Pressing ranges from 19 to 65; the lowest-pressing setups (19 and 25) are flagged for away games or stronger opponents.

Why it works

A crowded midfield shuts the centre. According to OSM Next Level, 4-5-1's five midfielders clog the middle and control the tempo, while 4-2-3-1's double pivot screens the back four. Once the ball is won, one of the five midfielders looks for a long-range shot, creating a constant scoring threat.

A low style keeps the team behind the ball. According to the source, these formations are hard to play through the middle.

Weaknesses of Shoot on sight

  • Less effective against crowded defences: According to OSM Next Level, long-range shooting is far less effective against a packed defence. Question this plan against parked sides such as 5-4-1 or 6-3-1.
  • An isolated striker: All five midfielders are needed for the central block, so the striker gets little support.
  • Exposed on the flanks: According to the source, 4-5-1 is vulnerable to high-tempo wing play, and 4-2-3-1 loses width up front when its wide attacking midfielders are squeezed.
  • Disciplined low blocks: It struggles to open opponents that sit deep and do not press.

What will opponents do against you?

OSM Next Level recommends a 4-3-3 with Wing play in every scenario against Shoot on sight 4-2-3-1 and 4-5-1, with pressing between 60 and 73 and tempo between 47 and 67. According to the source, the aim is to take the ball off you and keep the game in your half, because a deep-lying opponent would give you shooting space in front of the box.

So when you play Shoot on sight, watch two things:

  • Full-backs: The opponent will come down the flanks, so keep them on Defend deep and pick players with strong defence ratings.
  • Offside trap: Off. The opponent's wing play and your deep defence do not suit a trap.

Tackling and referees

According to OSM Helper, referees get stricter from green to red, and you should lower tackling as they do. With pressing at 65 in the 4-2-3-1 setup, keeping tackling on Normal or Careful under a strict referee matters even more.

The game plans have not changed since our 2022 Shoot on sight guide. The 26/27 version adds the community's current setups and data on how opponents approach this plan. OSM's official help page also recommends testing a tactic in a friendly first.
