OSM Defensive Tactic 2027 (26/27): Best Setups
How to set up a defensive tactic in OSM 26/27: what the defensive settings mean, the community's back-five and back-six setups and how to adjust for the opponent.
5 min read

In brief
AI summaryCommunity-favored 26/27 defensive setups use five or six defenders, low style, deep defending, and counter-attacks or shoot-on-sight tactics.
Defensive choices should match the opponent: protect the wings against Wing play, maintain pressure against Shoot on sight, and consider central midfield overloads against Passing game.
Use zonal marking, keep the offside trap off by default, reduce tackling against strict referees, and note that these community recommendations remain untested.

For an OSM defensive tactic in 26/27, the community's leading setups are built on a back five or six and a low style: 5-4-1B with Shoot on sight, and 5-3-2 or 5-3-1-1 with Counter-attack. But the opponent's game plan changes how you should defend; the same "bus" does not work against everyone.
The setups come from OSM Helper's site tactics, and the opponent-specific warnings from OSM Next Level's guides, a community tool. We have not tested them.
What the defensive settings mean in-game

| Setting | Defensive option | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Style | 0–19 Park the bus, 20–39 Defensive | More players stay behind the ball |
| Pressing | 0–19 Don't press, 20–39 Sit deep | The team stays compact and waits in its own half |
| Defenders | Defend deep | The back line stays deep |
| Midfielders | Protect the defence | The midfield drops in front of the defence |
| Forwards | Drop deep | The forwards help defend too |
| Game plan | Counter-attack | Sit deep and break quickly |
The in-game slider band names come from OSM Helper's list of in-game labels. According to OSM Next Level's guide, style sets how attacking the team is, pressing what happens without the ball, and tempo how fast you play.
The community's defensive setups

| Formation | Game plan | F / M / D | Pressing/Style/Tempo | Flagged for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5-4-1B | Shoot on sight | Support midfield / Protect the defence / Defend deep | 39/29/59 | All situations |
| 5-3-2 | Counter-attack | Attack only / Protect the defence / Defend deep | 30/25/60 | Stronger opponents (home and away) |
| 5-3-1-1 | Counter-attack | Attack only / Protect the defence / Defend deep | 10/15/80 | Stronger opponents (home and away) |
| 5-2-3A | Counter-attack | Attack only / Protect the defence / Defend deep | 70/30/70 | Stronger at home; even and stronger away |
| 6-3-1A | Counter-attack | Attack only / Stay in position / Defend deep | 80/45/50 | Even and stronger opponents away |
What they share: defenders on Defend deep, the offside trap off and style at 45 or lower. Tempo is 59 or higher in four of the five; a defensive side wants to break quickly once it wins the ball. The 5-3-1-1 at Pressing 10 and Tempo 80 is the extreme version: no pressing at all, then one-touch football once the ball is won.
Defending by opponent: one bus does not fit all

- Against Wing play: According to OSM Next Level, the biggest weakness of back fives is sustained wing play, which stretches the line. Pick wide defenders with strong defence ratings and keep your midfield on Protect the defence.
- Against Shoot on sight: According to the same source, retreating against these sides hands them shooting space in front of the box. Here, defending means taking the ball off them; do not switch pressing off entirely.
- Against Long ball or Counter-attack: According to OSM Helper's guide, the offside trap can work against these plans. OSM Next Level rarely uses it, though; if your line cannot step up together, do not take the risk.
- Against Passing game: Since Passing game builds through the middle, back fives that crowd the centre with three central midfielders (5-3-2, 5-3-1-1) look the more logical choice.
Marking, offside and tackling

Marking: Under OSM Next Level's rule, use zonal marking if your defenders outnumber the opponent's forwards by at least one, and man marking if not. With five or six defenders, zonal marking is enough against almost any opponent.
Offside trap: Off by default. Setting a trap with a deep-lying defence contradicts the setup anyway.
Tackling: According to OSM Helper, referees get stricter from green to red, and you should lower your tackling as they do. Defending means lots of duels, and one red card can wreck the whole plan.
Other tools that strengthen your defence
According to OSM Helper's guide, secret training stops opponents spying on you and adds 2.5% performance, while a training camp gives a 25% boost in the next match. We could not confirm these figures in an official source. Developing your defenders through training is also a lasting fix.
What changed since our older guide
Our 2022 defensive tactic guide centred on a single setup. The 26/27 version adds several community setups and explains what to change depending on the opponent's game plan. The tactics screen is the same, and OSM's official help page still recommends testing a tactic in a friendly.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best defensive tactic in OSM?
There is no single answer. Community setups revolve around a back five or six, a low style and Counter-attack; which one works depends on the opponent's game plan.
What style should a defensive tactic use?
Between 15 and 45 in the community setups. The 0–19 band shows as "Park the bus" and 20–39 as "Defensive".
Should I use man marking when defending?
If your defenders outnumber the opponent's forwards, zonal marking is enough. With five or six defenders, that is almost always the case.
Should I sit deep against a Shoot on sight side?
According to the community source, no; sitting deep gives them long-range chances. Trying to take the ball off them is more effective.
