Microsoft and AMD say FSR 4.1 Xbox Series X|S support is now open to developers. Machine-learning upscaling can now run on the consoles. It looks especially promising for the less powerful Series S.
The news came in Microsoft's Xbox developer blog and in posts on X from AMD and Xbox's Jason Ronald. When players will see it in games is not yet clear.
What does FSR 4.1 Xbox Series X|S support offer?
FSR renders a game at a lower internal resolution and scales it up. Microsoft says it optimized AMD FSR Upscaling 4 for Series X|S. It says this makes ML-based upscaling practical on the consoles' RDNA 2-based GPUs.
| Topic | What was announced |
|---|---|
| Platforms | Xbox Series X|S and ASUS ROG Xbox Ally handhelds |
| Version | FSR Upscaling 4.1.2 (per Windows Central) |
| Models | Full and Lite INT8 models |
| Developer tool | Microsoft GDK sample; works on Series X|S and Windows |
| Comparison | Switch between FSR 4.1 Full, FSR 4.1 Lite and FSR 3 |

How will developers try FSR 4.1?
Microsoft released a new GDK sample. It shows how to integrate FSR 4 on Series X|S and Windows. It uses AMD's FSR SDK. It includes both Full and Lite models.
In the sample, developers can switch quickly between FSR 4.1 Full, FSR 4.1 Lite and FSR 3. They can try different resolutions and quality settings. On-screen metrics let them compare image quality and GPU cost.
Microsoft also shared measurements of the GPU cost of both models at different output resolutions. Those numbers appear on the developer blog. Partners in the Xbox developer program can send questions through the official forums.

The Xbox post on X gives the same message: FSR Upscaling 4.1.2 is available to Series X|S developers today. The new GDK sample demonstrates Full and Lite models optimized for each console. Xbox thanks its AMD partners.
Pure Xbox writes that this gives developers a new way to improve image quality. In some cases performance may rise too. That helps most on a weaker device like the Series S.
What results have been seen so far?
According to Windows Central, AMD began rolling out FSR 4.1 on October 23, 2026, starting with beta drivers for Xbox Ally handhelds. Now Series X|S developers get it too. The site sees the tech as part of Microsoft's push to unify consoles, handhelds and desktop PCs.
Windows Central also shared its own testing. With FSR 4.1 on an Xbox Ally X, demanding games like Cyberpunk 2077, Control Resonance and Gears of War: E-Day showed steadier frame rates. The Witcher 3 Remaster ran closer to 60 FPS. Some games that looked soft in Quality mode improved noticeably.
Those results are for the Xbox Ally X, not Series X|S. Pure Xbox stresses this too. There are no real-world console examples yet.
What does this mean for players?
According to Pure Xbox, the tech could help most on the lower-powered Series S. It can improve image quality. In some cases it can raise performance. It may also keep both consoles capable for many years. That could hold even after Project Helix, the next generation, arrives.
Manage expectations, though. Adding support is up to studios. Which games will get it, and when, has not been announced. It is hard to judge the quality gain before seeing the first examples.
