Its strengths are midfield control, defensive coverage, and frequent long-range shots, while its weaknesses include an isolated striker and difficulty breaking low defensive blocks.
It is most vulnerable to 4-3-3 Wing play, while stronger opponents or packed defences may require lower pressing or switching to a wing-focused formation.

The OSM 4-2-3-1 tactic in short: two defensive midfielders, three attacking midfielders and a lone striker, built around Shoot on sight. The 26/27 community setup: Defenders on Defend deep, Midfielders on Protect the defence, Forwards on Attack only, with Pressing 65, Style 30 and Tempo 55.
This setup comes from OSM Helper's site tactics, where it is flagged for every venue and strength situation and is the site's most copied tactic. We have not tested it.
OSM 4-2-3-1 tactic settings

| Setting | Value | In-game label |
|---|---|---|
| Game plan | Shoot on sight | Shoot from distance when possible |
| Forwards | Attack only | The lone striker stays high |
| Midfielders | Protect the defence | Five midfielders screen the back line |
| Defenders | Defend deep | The back four stays deep |
| Pressing | 65 | Close down opposition |
| Style | 30 | Defensive |
| Tempo | 55 | Play possession |
| Marking / Offside trap | Zonal marking / No | Check marking against the opponent's forwards |
Choose tackling by the referee. According to OSM Helper's guide, you can play aggressively with green and blue referees; Normal or Careful is safer with orange and red ones. With pressing at 65, lowering tackling under a strict referee matters even more.
The logic of this setup

Game plan: According to OSM Helper, Shoot on sight is played with crowded midfields; five midfielders are ideal and its most popular formations are 4-5-1 and 4-2-3-1. OSM Next Level also classifies 4-2-3-1 as a Shoot on sight formation.
Low style, high pressing: Style 30 keeps the team behind the ball, while pressing at 65 aims to win it in midfield. Once the ball is won, one of the five midfielders looks for a long-range shot.
Medium tempo: 55, "Play possession". A side that shoots from distance does not need to move the ball quickly; it shoots when the chance comes.
Strengths and weaknesses of 4-2-3-1
| Strength | Weakness |
|---|---|
| The double pivot screens the back four | Long-range shooting is far less effective against a packed defence |
| High shot volume from distance, constant threat | The lone striker gets isolated |
| Three attacking midfielders control the centre | Struggles to break a disciplined, low-pressing block |
| Hard to play through the middle | Width up front shrinks when the wide attacking midfielders are squeezed |
This list comes from OSM Next Level's 4-2-3-1 page. What will opponents do against you? The same source recommends a 4-3-3 with Wing play against 4-2-3-1, with pressing between 60 and 73 and tempo between 47 and 59. Expect them to try to take the ball off you and come down the flanks without rushing.
Fine-tuning by opponent

- Against Wing play: Keep the midfield on Protect the defence and the full-backs on Defend deep. Pick full-backs with strong defence ratings for the one-on-one duels out wide.
- Against three forwards: Four defenders give you a spare man, so zonal marking is enough. Against four forwards (such as 3-3-4), OSM Next Level's marking rule calls for man marking.
- Against parked buses (5-4-1, 6-3-1): According to the source, long-range shooting is far less effective against a packed defence. Consider switching to a 4-3-3 with Wing play; OSM Next Level recommends that in every scenario against those formations.
- Against a much stronger side: Style 30 is already defensive; lowering pressing slightly helps avoid gaps behind your midfield.
Player selection

- Two defensive midfielders: High defence ratings; they are the shield in front of the back four.
- Three attacking midfielders: High attack ratings; most long-range shots will come from this line.
- Lone striker: Your best attacker. According to the source he will often be isolated, so individual quality matters.
- Specialists: According to OSM Helper, giving the same player more than two roles (captain, penalties, free kicks, corners) reduces his efficiency.
What changed since our older guide
Our 2022 4-2-3-1 guide also used Shoot on sight, but recommended Support midfield for both forwards and defenders and a 70% tempo. The 26/27 community setup is more cautious: defenders deep, midfield protecting the defence, style 30. The structure of the tactics screen is the same. OSM's official help page also advises testing the tactic in a friendly.
