The 26/27 community answer for an OSM counter tactic against Passing game: do not join their passing contest in midfield; play down the flanks. Against a 4-4-2 playing Passing game, the suggested setup is a 4-3-3 with Wing play; for an even home game, Pressing 60, Style 65, Tempo 60.

The values come from OSM Next Level's 4-4-2 page (23 October 2026), a community tool that treats 4-4-2 as a Passing game formation. We have not tested them.

What is Passing game and who plays it?

According to OSM Helper's 26/27 guide, Passing game is about keeping the ball, it is the most balanced plan in the game, and its number one formation is 4-4-2. OSM Next Level adds that it builds patiently through the middle.

Passing game setups in OSM Helper's site tactics look like this:

Formation Line tactics (F / M / D) Pressing/Style/Tempo
4-4-2B Attack only / Stay in position (Protect the defence in one) / Defend deep 45–65 / 50–59 / 55–60 (five examples)
4-4-2A Attack only / Stay in position / Defend deep 67/65/59
4-4-2A Attack only / Protect the defence / Defend deep (man marking) 60/40/50
4-3-3B Attack only / Stay in position / Defend deep 60/75/69

The common thread: midfield on Stay in position, style mostly in the "Neutral" band, medium tempo. The opponent will want to keep the ball and slow the game down.

Why does this work against Passing game?

Do not compete in the middle: OSM Next Level is clear that entering a passing contest in midfield against 4-4-2 means playing their game. Two flat banks of four stay compact in the centre and are hard to play through.

The flanks are open: In a 4-4-2 the full-backs stay narrow to protect the flat back four. Your wing play drags them wide; either the centre and half-spaces open up, or your winger is left free.

Numbers in midfield: A 4-3-3's three central midfielders give you a spare man against a 4-4-2's two, which makes life harder for a side that wants the ball.

Speed: According to the source, 4-4-2 gets out-paced by high-tempo wing play, especially at home. The average tempo against 4-4-2 is 62, higher than against shoot-on-sight 4-2-3-1 (54) and 4-5-1 (56).

How much should you press?

Pressing a Passing game side is how you win the ball, but overdoing it leaves space behind. In OSM Next Level's data, average pressing against 4-4-2 is 65: 73 when stronger, 64 when even and 58 when weaker. Away and stronger it reaches 76, just below the "Press high up the pitch" band.

If the opponent plays Passing game with a 4-3-3

Passing game is not only a 4-4-2 plan; OSM Helper's site tactics include a 4-3-3B example too. OSM Next Level's 4-3-3 tables assume the opponent plays Wing play, so there is no row specific to a 4-3-3 on Passing game. Apply the same logic: avoid the middle, play the flanks and keep your midfield on Protect the defence to break their passing chain in front of your back line.

What changed since our older guide

The game plans are the same as in our 2022 guide to countering Passing game. The 26/27 community data favours wing play and a medium tempo against it; the tactics screen has not changed. OSM's official advice still applies: test the tactic in a friendly.
