The Elder Scrolls 6 Sentinel is official. Bethesda revealed the full name of its next mainline RPG on November 3 at the end of a video marking the studio's 40th anniversary, and the short teaser all but confirms a Hammerfell setting. There is still no release date.
The game was first announced at E3 in June 2018. Since then, fans have had little more than a few seconds of rolling hills to go on. More than eight years later, we finally have a name, a logo and a cryptic hint about the story.

How was The Elder Scrolls 6 Sentinel revealed?
The reveal came in a video of under ten minutes celebrating Bethesda Game Studios' four decades. Studio head Todd Howard walked through the team's history, starting with its first game, Gridiron, in 1986, before turning to the question fans ask the most.
"You know, everybody's always asking about Elder Scrolls 6," Howard said, adding that this felt like the perfect time to share what the game is actually called. The video then cut to an Elder Scroll half-buried in sand, followed by the new logo.
The official Xbox Wire post is just the logo. According to The Verge, Bethesda is not sharing any other details yet, so gameplay, story and system requirements will have to wait.
Where is Sentinel set?
The teaser ends with a quote from Yazar, a Moth Priest in the service of High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell: "The scroll offered only a shimmer, a veil thinly lifted to my eyes. A future lost. A victory undone. Sands of time scattered by fate."
In Elder Scrolls lore, Sentinel is both a kingdom and a city in Hammerfell, the desert province of the Redguards. Bethesda itself said after the reveal that it was great to finally share the game's name and location. Hammerfell previously featured in The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard and The Elder Scrolls Online.
The Verge reported last week that Sentinel will dig into the history of the Elder Scrolls themselves and the secrets of these ancient artifacts. A scroll buried in the sand fits that idea neatly.

What does this mean for players?
Skyrim has been played, re-released and modded since 2011, so its successor remains one of the most anticipated RPGs around. The name reveal also lands in the month of Skyrim's 15th anniversary. Still, Bethesda's message is clear: do not expect gameplay any time soon.
The reveal comes during a turbulent stretch for Xbox, Bethesda's parent. We covered the uncertain future of Arkane Lyon and Marvel's Blade and the departures at id Software. For the bigger picture, see Microsoft's voluntary exit offer story.
