WoW Forever has broken records. Blizzard says World of Warcraft: Forever is the biggest launch in the game's history by peak concurrent players, and it has brought back more returning players than any WoW launch before it.
The announcement came from the official World of Warcraft account on X. As GamesRadar+ and Icy Veins report, Blizzard thanked players and highlighted both records. What it did not do is share the actual numbers behind them.
Which records did WoW Forever break?
Blizzard's post lists two milestones: the biggest launch in WoW history by peak concurrent players, and the highest number of returning players in WoW history. Executive producer Holly Longdale added a third: Forever drew the most new players for a WoW launch in 15 years. Icy Veins notes that this comparison reaches back to the Cataclysm era.
| Stat | Source | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Biggest launch by peak concurrent players | @Warcraft | No figure given |
| Most returning players ever | @Warcraft | No figure given |
| Most new players in 15 years | Holly Longdale | Executive producer |
| 3,924 virtual machines | @Warcraft (Nov 5) | Launch server setup |
| 251,136 GB memory, 70,480 CPU cores | @Warcraft (Nov 5) | Launch server setup |

Why won't Blizzard share player numbers?
Blizzard stopped publishing World of Warcraft subscriber numbers years ago. The last official figure was 5.5 million subscribers in 2015. Since then the company has spoken in milestones such as "biggest" and "fastest" instead of totals. Forever is not sold on its own either, because it comes with a regular WoW subscription. That means there is no unit sales figure to report.
The only hard numbers so far are on the server side. Blizzard said launch ran on 3,924 virtual machines with 251,136 GB of memory and 70,480 CPU cores. Citing Streams Charts, Icy Veins reports a launch-day Twitch peak of about 1.12 million viewers, just behind WoW Classic's launch in 2019.
What is WoW Forever?
WoW: Forever is a permanent new branch that sits alongside modern World of Warcraft and WoW Classic. It is built on Azeroth as it was in 2004, but adds new stories, zones, quests and races, with a level 1-60 journey. We covered the launch details in our WoW Forever launch story.

Why was the launch so smooth?
According to GamesRadar+, Forever had one of the smoothest launches in the franchise's history. Long queues and server crashes are common at MMO launches. The infrastructure figures Blizzard shared suggest it planned for heavy demand from day one, which helped returning players get a good first impression.
What does this mean for players?
- Expect busy realms, so check server status before logging in at peak times.
- The Auction House will be lively in the first weeks, and prices may move quickly.
- New players should keep finding groups easily while the population stays high.
Why does this success matter?
Forever's numbers show that older MMOs can find a second life with fresh content. ArenaNet is trying something similar with the first new Guild Wars DLC in 20 years, as covered in our Guild Wars Afterlife story. Microsoft's big franchises are also in the spotlight after Bethesda named The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. For real player counts, we may have to wait for Microsoft's next earnings report.
