Valhalla New Game+ update is out: Mithril and PS5 Pro

The Assassin's Creed Valhalla New Game+ update is out. Ubisoft's Update 1.8 brings the Mithril resource, an Extended Progression mode and PS5 Pro support.

The patch is the game's biggest content drop in more than three years. Push Square says the update is far more in-depth than expected.

How does Valhalla New Game+ work?

Ubisoft says this has been a request for ages. After finishing the story, you can start your Viking quest over. You need to complete the Holy Day Quest, the last quest of the Hamtunscire region. It comes just before the true ending.

Each New Game+ run is harder than the last. The game promises new challenges for players who want to revisit the Viking Age.

In New Game+, receiving gear or a book of knowledge you already own gives you Mithril. Mithril is a new resource. It is also sold in the Niflheim, Mastery and River Raid shops. Looting Carbon, Nickel and Tungsten in a Wealth Chest now gives Platinum. Platinum was previously only in the Dawn of Ragnarok DLC. It is now free. That means Divine quality upgrades no longer need the DLC.

Extended Progression and higher power caps

The maximum upgrade level of Divine gear rises from 13 to 27. Each upgrade needs Mithril. In other words, you will need to collect a lot of it.

The new Extended Progression option gives a more granular sense of progression. With it on, gear upgrades and runes raise Power by 1 point. Masteries raise Power every 5 skill points. Ubisoft says the goal is to make gear matter more. The challenge is greater, and so is the reward.

What changed with the Stash and rune forge?

There is a new Stash in Ravensthorpe. You can store any piece of gear or any rune from your inventory there. It was added to help organize a growing inventory.

• A new rune forge tab upgrades runes for silver: from lesser to normal, normal to greater, and greater to superior.
• Superior is a new tier that only comes from this tab, and it costs Mithril.
• The engrave page adds more than 300 new engravable runes. They cover perks from DLCs and the Helix Store.
• When you own a weapon or an armor set, you can engrave it into a rune for 450 silver.

The update also adds two achievements: Ivaldi's Heir and Circle of Renewal. A Master Assassin outfit for Naoe is included too.

PS5 Pro support and balance changes

Valhalla launched years before the PS5 Pro and never got a full upgrade for it. The patch notes now mention PSSR 2 support. Push Square reports that the 4K quality mode runs at 60 frames per second.

Ubisoft also made small balance changes to improve dual wielding. Stat runes and mastery bonuses were tuned. Some skill values were rounded. For example, Assassination Damage now grants 5.3 per point instead of 5.26.

It will take some play time to see how Mithril changes the endgame. Still, the patch adds a serious new layer to a game many thought was finished.

If you finished Valhalla and want to return, this patch is for you. Push Square reminds readers that the game is a 200-hour journey. The new Mithril system adds a fresh goal on top of that.
