What Is FUT Champions?
Initially, the competitive game mode included 40 matches over three days. That equals 10 hours of playtime in just three days. FIFA fans can complete it, but it is a lot to ask of a casual player. Qualifying is also an exhausting process. Players have to win a four-game daily tournament that EA runs from Monday to Thursday, and you only have a limited number of attempts.
FIFA 19 cut this to 30 matches on the weekend, and FIFA 22 went a step further. Instead of tournaments, players can earn points at their own pace, and each weekend consists of only 20 games. Qualifying for the weekend part requires four wins out of 10 matches during the week, but the mode is more accessible than ever. EA revamped the rewards system in December, rewarding players who reach 18 wins or 19 wins. Previously, 16 wins was the maximum reward. The update encouraged top-level players to compete in FUT Champs.
What Will the FIFA 23 FUT Champs Reward System Look Like?
EA announced that it has added Shapeshifters promo cards to the FUT Champs rewards for the Weekend League starting July 15. The same rules as TOTW squads do not bind promo squads, and EA can do what it wants with the cards. For example, EA could raise Eden Hazard from 85 to 95 overall and completely change his position and stats. The quality gap between a TOTW Squad and this promo squad makes it hard to justify playing in the Weekend League with the rewards unchanged.
I believe EA should make promo cards in the rewards a permanent feature, and it would be a great addition to FIFA 23. Red Player Picks should be changed from TOTW cards to promo cards. Since player pick items are untradeable, they do not disrupt the market. EA can keep the TOTW Player Pick packs and only give untradeable promo packs. Either way, what we have right now is not sustainable.
Some players may argue that TOTW cards should remain as rewards, but Inform cards in FIFA 22 have been nothing more than a novelty item, and always have been.
