Monster Hunter Outlanders is out now on mobile

Monster Hunter Outlanders is out now. The Capcom-licensed mobile hunting game from TiMi Studio Group launched on iOS and Android on October 29. It is free-to-play with in-app purchases, while the mainland China version is planned for 2027 or later.

Pocket Gamer stresses that this is not a spin-off in a different genre. It is a faithful take on the classic Monster Hunter formula, rebuilt for phones.

Monster Hunter Outlanders launch details

Capcom describes the game as survival hunting action. In its press release, it frames Outlanders as a way to grow its user base by bringing its flagship series to mobile devices.

What is in Monster Hunter Outlanders?

The game is set on Aesoland, a new island with its own ecosystem. It mixes familiar and new monsters, and an original story asks you to uncover the island's mysteries.

Eight classic weapons, including Charge Blade

There are eight weapon types at launch: Great Sword, Long Sword, Dual Blades, Hammer, Lance, Charge Blade, Heavy Bowgun and Bow. Charge Blade arrives with the launch version. Each weapon pairs with an Adventurer to unlock new follow-up moves, and more weapons are planned in later updates.

Four-player hunts and Buddies

You can hunt solo or team up with three friends. NPC Adventurers can fill empty slots. Three Buddies, Palico, Rutaco and Trillan, join you on the hunt. The big targets include the Elder Dragon Ruger Aidal and the game's exclusive Radiant species.

Does it support controllers?

Partly. TiMi says controller support at launch covers hunts, the quest system and world exploration. The team plans to extend it to more areas and refine it in future updates, with this first pass arriving as part of Season 0.

How is it different from Monster Hunter Now?

The series has been on phones before. Niantic's Monster Hunter Now is an AR game in the style of Pokémon Go. Outlanders aims for something else: as GamesIndustry.biz puts it, the full Monster Hunter experience on a mobile device. Capcom has also just brought Monster Hunter Rise to mobile via Netflix.

Two control modes

Development director Bryan Li told GamesIndustry.biz that the team built two control schemes. Classic Mode is aimed at players used to mobile action games, while the simpler Adventure Mode is for those newer to the series. Li adds that most of the team are long-time fans, so familiar monsters, weapons and the feel of impact were kept intact.

Launch event

A Challenge Event for the playable Adventurer Midori starts at launch. The launch trailer shows classic weapons, original Adventurers and hunts against Radiant Monsters, along with the first look at the Charge Blade in action.

The App Store page lists English plus nine more languages. Monetisation is built around in-app purchases, so it is worth checking the shop before you spend.
