PGL Masters Bucharest: FUT out, Vitality reach semis

PGL Masters Bucharest has lost FUT. Nemiga beat FUT 2-0 in the quarter-finals, while Vitality came from a map down to beat NAVI 2-1. Nemiga and Vitality now meet in the semi-finals in Bucharest.

FUT had gone 3-0 in the Swiss stage, so the exit is a surprise. It also creates a roster headache for Astralis ahead of the Singapore Major.

PGL Masters Bucharest quarter-final results

The event runs from October 24 to 31 in Bucharest with a $1,250,000 prize pool and 16 teams. The grand final is a best-of-five.

How did Nemiga knock out FUT?

The series started on Nuke, where a disjointed T side left Nemiga 3-9 down at half-time. HLTV put their map win probability at just 4% at that point, and robo had only one kill in the first half.

Things turned after the second pistol round. Xant3r extended his streak to seven straight Nuke maps rated 1.10 or higher, finishing on 1.28. But syph0 led the way with a 2.38 CT-side rating and a key 1v2 clutch as Nemiga won the map 13-11 in the final round of regulation.

Pistol rounds decided Dust2

Nemiga opened Dust2 on the CT side and quickly led 4-1. FUT then took over and reached six rounds at the half. After the switch, Nemiga won their fourth pistol round of the series and went 9-6 up. FUT tied it at 9-9, but Nemiga closed it out 13-9.

HLTV notes it was only SunPayus' fourth official match for FUT since he arrived from G2 at the start of the month.

Vitality beat NAVI for the second time

Vitality beat NAVI for the second time at the event. NAVI started strong on their own Cache pick, with iM posting a 1.89 rating. The win also ended Vitality's eight-game win streak on Cache.

Then ZywOo took over on Mirage, recording a 2.61 rating on the CT side, with big clutches from jL and mezii. In the Dust2 decider, Vitality led 8-4 on the CT side and ran away with the game.

How the semi-finalists got here

The two semi-finalists took very different routes. Vitality finished the Swiss stage 3-1, beating 9z and The MongolZ 2-0, and their only loss came against FUT. Nemiga lost 2-0 to BETBOOM in the groups and had to win on the final day of the 2-2 pool. Playoff series are single-elimination best-of-threes, with a best-of-three third-place decider and a best-of-five grand final.

Why cmtry may miss the Singapore Major

FUT's exit also affects Astralis. HLTV reports that cmtry is expected to miss the Singapore Major for Astralis because of VRS roster rules. He is still listed on FUT's VRS roster, and FUT have no matches left before the November 2 invite cut-off.

If SunPayus played a fifth match, he could join FUT's VRS roster and free cmtry. The only route would be FUT entering an open LAN such as EPIC 49 in Kettering, and they have given no sign they plan to. Astralis will likely have to use a stand-in.
