Bel'Veth Runes & Build Guide: How to Play

In this guide, we'll go over the best tips and tricks for playing LoL's newest Jungler, Bel'Veth. With this guide, we'll cover some more advanced tips on how to play Bel'Veth, so if you're not sure what her kit is, you'd do well to check it out first.

We've only had Bel'Veth for a few weeks, but we can already say she'll significantly shake up what's currently a stale jungle meta. Bringing an entirely new playstyle to the Jungle, much like Kindred did, Bel'Veth is sure to be one of the most exciting new champions. How to Play Bel'Veth

Lately, new champions have dominated the meta in several roles right after release and completely warped the game around them. While having a champion strong in multiple roles is fun, it's incredibly hard to balance. As the Season 12 champion, Riot spent most of Bel'Veth's power on her passive, Death in Lavender, to avoid another repeat of that joke. This ability grants Bel'Veth infinite attack speed every time she clears a jungle camp. This means that if Bel'Veth tries to push a lane, she won't be able to stack her passive and access most of her kit. So unfortunately, Bel'Veth will only be a Jungler.

Bel'Veth has an incredibly interesting and unique kit. Both complex and simple, Bel'Veth's playstyle will have a unique learning curve, but it will reward players who take the time to learn it and apply its rhythm.

The cornerstone of Bel'Veth's kit is Q, Void Surge. This ability lets Bel'Veth dash in 4 different directions, each with its own unique cooldown. At first glance, this ability might seem like it only offers one direction for chasing or fleeing, making the other 3 pointless. In reality, Bel'Veth has an unpredictable and flexible movement pattern that can be used to easily outmaneuver opponents.

Once you have quite a few passive stacks and some items, Bel'Veth starts to take over the game. She turns into an absolute monster capable of taking down 3-4 enemies alone. This incredibly powerful late-game payoff comes at a cost, though — early in the game, Bel'Veth will be quite weak due to a lack of stacks and gold. This means that, unlike most junglers, Bel'Veth wants to quietly farm and avoid helping her team. This shift in playstyle can feel difficult at first for junglers, who are used to helping their team a lot during the laning phase. Bel'Veth is a much more selfish champion, and she's punished heavily for being too active early on. Bel'Veth is encouraged to farm her jungle peacefully and hope her team doesn't lose the game before she comes online.

What Should Bel'Veth's Build Be?

Thanks to her passive, Bel'Veth provides free attack speed and gets the most value out of an on-hit build. Aside from not building any crit chance, she's essentially a melee carry like Yasuo or Master Yi.

If possible, you may want to build Kraken Slayer or Blade of the Ruined King first on Bel'Veth to give her an early power spike that helps her curve better into the late game. However, in tougher matchups like Trundle or Volibear, Bel'Veth will need to pick up Immortal Shieldbow to keep herself alive in fights. After your first Legendary item, you'll want to settle on two more on-hit items. Generally, you should choose between Guinsoo's Rageblade, Blade of the Ruined King, or Wit's End. Blade is clearly good against tankier team compositions that are weak to percent-health damage. Wit's End is a genuinely strong defensive option against magic damage threats and should probably be built as often as possible. Guinsoo's is simply a powerful item that scales in value with the more items you have, making it great for Bel'Veth's scaling. Once you have your Legendary item and a couple of on-hit items, you'll want to pick up as many defensive items as possible, like Death's Dance, Guardian Angel, and Maw of Malmortius.

For runes, Bel'Veth takes Lethal Tempo or Conqueror as her Keystone. This is because she gets a ton of value from stacking runes thanks to her high attack speed and her E, Royal Maelstrom. Lethal Tempo should be the standard choice most of the time, but Conqueror definitely has a place too. Her minor runes are fairly flexible, but you want things that give you sustain and durability. Things like Legend: Alacrity or Bone Plating will help Bel'Veth a lot, since she doesn't really take much damage. Sudden Impact gains a lot of value thanks to her running around the map so much.

When Is Bel'Veth Strong or Weak?

Because Bel'Veth is so dependent on scaling, she loses early to champions who are active on the map and speed up the pace of the game. This weakness is even more pronounced in the jungle, since the role traditionally means helping your team out early. Matchups against Wukong, Trundle, Volibear, Jarvan IV, and Nunu can be quite tough, even if they can't outright kill you in a 1v1.

On the other hand, if the enemy doesn't pressure her, Bel'Veth will reach a critical mass point and become unstoppable. This breakpoint can be reached fairly quickly against junglers with much lower tempo, like Gragas or Lillia. In these matchups, Bel'Veth will simply out-scale them, so she doesn't mind matching them in the farm. She might even invade and get herself ahead, since they can't really duel her well either.

The most unique thing that makes Bel'Veth interesting, like Kindred, is that she's a Jungler who's rewarded for split-pushing after securing an objective. Bel'Veth's ultimate form is quite important in terms of how powerful she becomes in the later stages of the game. Because of this, it's crucial to make sure you're constantly feeding your ultimate form with Void Coral to maintain it. Unfortunately, killing champions is fairly inconsistent, but objectives aren't. Since objectives have set, consistent spawn timers, Bel'Veth can plan her game around them to maximize her ultimate form and her impact on the map. No champion in the game gets as much value from taking the Rift Herald as Bel'Veth does, so planning to take both Rift Heralds every game should be something every Bel'Veth player tries to do.

When Bel'Veth claims one of the Void's neutral monsters and consumes her Void Coral, she can use her special split-push abilities. This creates an interesting game plan, since Bel'Veth, thanks to the minions summoned only by her ultimate form, can snowball a Baron or Herald into taking down several towers anywhere on the map. Bel'Veth already has a strong duel, so giving her incredible structure damage means the enemy has to respond whenever she shows up on a side lane.

One thing to keep in mind is that junglers generally dislike side lanes, since they don't have Teleport access, so they always have to be around for objectives. However, this isn't a problem for Bel'Veth, since she only wants to move to a side lane after securing an objective, giving her a very healthy and rewarding game plan.

In conclusion, Bel'Veth will be a very interesting champion for the game. Bringing a new movement mini-game and a new playstyle to the Jungle, Bel'Veth will be fun both to play and to watch. Since there's a bit of a learning curve, make sure you try her out in Normal games before taking her into Ranked. You'll find Bel'Veth to be an extremely rewarding champion that fulfills the hyper-carry power fantasy.
